Ready for a free pattern:
As some of you know I love to loom knit. I made some hay twine rugs a while back and they are STILL holding up for us (and trust me they really get used at my house.)
Ok, with that said a while back I talked with Katherine Blocksdorf (one of the editors at about.com) She did an article on what you can do with Hay twine. So, of course I had to send her pictures of my rugs. So, she did a little article on them (which of course made this girl here smile!) Anyway, in her article she said she could see how it would make a good curry. I thought to myself, why not.. So, I made one.
FREE PATTERN
If, you have horses or other livestock and you loom knit this is GREAT for you! I made this out of hay twine (which if you have livestock of any kind you probley have hay twine.) If, you by chance do not have hay twine (maybe you board your horses) most farms will be more then happy to share some twine with you if you ask them for it.
I started this project with the PINK loom from Knifty Knitters (hey, loom company's if you want me to use your looms send them and I will..lol.. Just joking guys.)
Ok, I started by putting the twine together (I tied them together. You can do a lark's knot if you'd like also but I cut my twine when I am opening a bale so I tied them together.)
You may need to adjust for bigger or smaller hands of course. I only made this one up for family to use. It's too big for my child but it works for me.
Start by casting on the 6th peg.

wrap in a figure 8 stitch pegs 6 and 7. Then go backwards and wrap pegs 7 and 6 again (making two strands of twine on each peg.) Knit off (take the bottom twine up and over the top twine and off the peg. Leaving the other twine on the peg.)

Row 1 Now INCREASE 1 peg on each side (you'll be wrapping pegs 5-6-7-8. You'll be doing this the same way you wrapped before.) Knit off.

Row 2 Again Increase 1 peg on each side (you'll be wrapping pegs 4-5-6-7-8-9) knit off again.

Row 3 Once again increase 1 peg on each side (you'll be wrapping pegs 3-4-5-6-7-8--9-10) Knit off. I did not include a picture this time but it's just the same as above but one more peg on each side.

Row 4 Again increase 1 peg on each side of the loom (you'll be wrapping 2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-11) knit off. No picture again but it's the same as you have been doing but one more peg on each side.

At this point I had to add more twine together. You may have had to do this at this point or maybe sooner (all depends on how long your twine is.)

Row 5 Again Increase 1 peg on each side of your loom. Now you will be wrapping ALL the pegs on your loom. Knit off.

Row 6 Wrap all pegs. Knit off..

Row 7 Wrap all your pegs again. Knit off

Row 16- You are going to decrease one peg on each side of the loom. You will take the twine from peg one and put it on peg 2. Also take the twine from peg 12 and put it on peg 11 (do both top and bottom of this loom.) I'll attach some pictures here.


As you can see peg 1 will have nothing on it. Peg 2 will have two twines on it. Peg 3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10 will have 1 twine. Peg 11 will have 2. Peg 12 will have nothing on it.
Now, knit the yarn extra yarn off of peg 2 and 11 (just like you have been doing. Take the bottom twine lift it above the top and off the loom.) This will leave you with one twine on peg 1-11 now.

Row 17 Wrap pegs 2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-11 (do not wrap the empty pegs 1 and 12)
Knit them off.

Row 18 decrease 1 peg on each side of the looms again. So, put the twine from peg 2 and put it on peg 3. Also take the twine from peg 11 and put it on peg 10.
Knit off the extra twine on pegs 3 and 10. Leaving one strand on pegs 3-10 (and nothing on pegs 1-2 and 11-12.)

Row 19 decrease as you have been one peg on each side of the loom. Take the twine from peg 3 and put it on 4. The twine from peg 10 and put it on peg 9. Knit off.

Row 20. wrap pegs 4-5-6-7-8-9. Knit off.

Row 21 decrease one peg on each side of the loom again. Take twine from peg 4 and put it on peg 5. Take twine from peg 9 and put it on 8. Knit off the extra twine (this will leave you one twine on pegs 5-6-7-8.. You'll have nothing on pegs 1-2-3-4-9-10-11.)

Row 22 Wrap pegs 5-6-7-8. Then knit off.

Row 23 Decrease one peg on each side. Take twine from peg 5 and put it on peg 6. Also take twine from peg 8 and put it on peg 7. Knit the extra twine off. Now you will have one twine on pegs 6-7. All the other pegs will not have anything on them.

Now you are going to take it off the loom. To do this you take the twine on the top pegs and put them on the bottom pegs. So, you will take peg 6 on the top and put it on peg 6 on the bottom. You will also take peg 7 and the top and put it on peg 7 on the bottom.
You will make it look like this picture.

Now, knit that extra twine off. So, you only have one twine on each of these pegs (6 and 7 that is.)
Now, crochet the last two pegs off (chain method. Flat method.) I also put one chain inbetween the pegs.

Ok, now set that to side.
You now need to make your strap to keep your hands in the curry.
This is how I did that.
Cast on in a figure 8 (just like you did for the main part of the curry.) pegs 1-4. Then go backwards from peg 4-3-2-1 wrapping in a figure 8. Knit off the extra twine.

I have I would say Med hands (not too thick really.)
Keep wrapping your pegs 1-2-3-4 (after each time you wrap and have two twines on the peg knit them off.) until you reach your desired length. I did this for 16 rows because my hands aren't too thick but I still wanted it big enough for my husband to use. I wear gloves most of the time in the winter too so these fit me nice with my lite weight gloves on.

Row 16 I took it off the loom. I did this by taking the top pegs and putting them on the bottom pegs (making two strings of twine on each bottom peg and nothing on the top.) Then I knitted them off leaving one twine on each peg.





After that I finsihed taking it off the loom just as I did the main part of the curry. I crochet off all the bottom pegs one at a time.

Once I had this off the loom I whipped stitched the handle to the base of the curry as such.


I would say it cleans just as well as my rubber curry that I use on them. I do not own one of those from Oster (or any brand like that where they tend to have more tread on them) so I can't say how it would stack up against them. All I can say is that it is free to make and it doesn't take all that long to do and it works just as good as the curry I own.
Now the cool part. I am going to post a video of the curry at work. Don't laugh and you need to watch close in the beginning because my horse wanted to see what I was doing. If, you look in the very beginning you'll see how dirty she was in one spot and how the curry cleans.
